On the bump... Jordan Zimmermann RHP
Zimmermann returned to the rotation with 5 2/3 quality innings against the White Sox after missing a week and a half with a right groin strain. He expects to pitch deeper into games than that, which he hopes this turn will help.
Game Notes...
Jordan Zimmermann (8-2, 2.58 ERA) returned from a groin injury over the weekend with his third straight win as the Tigers beat the White Sox. He will look for his fourth straight when the Tigers host the Blue Jays in the finale of a three-game series Wednesday. Toronto sends R.A. Dickey (3-6, 4.21) to the mound at Comerica Park, trying to prevent Detroit's sixth straight victory.
With Toronto's top-of-the-order firepower in Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion (37 combined home runs), Zimmermann said he is well aware they can jump the yard on him, but his mindset doesn't change.
"I'm the same guy every time, I'm going to attack," Zimmermann said. "Obviously, these guys are going to try and hit home runs, so the chances that I run into one are probably pretty good, but I'm going to do my best to keep them off-balance and keep the ball in the ballpark."
Zimmermann has allowed six home runs on the season. All of them came in a five-game span before he kept the White Sox in the park on Friday. He said he feels fine and has returned to normal following the groin injury that caused him to miss two starts, though he avoided the disabled list.
The knuckleballer Dickey won his last start, allowing just two hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings at Boston. Dickey is 5-1 with a 3.38 ERA against Detroit since the 2010 season. His only loss during that span came at Comerica.
