Kevin Pillar this year: 24 in AA .316/.364/.450/.814 5 HR and 14 SB in 68 games. 31 K's and 18 walks. Reed Johnson in 2001: 24 in AA .314/.383/.451/.834 13 HR and 42 SB in 136 games. 79 K's and 45 walks. Pillar on a 136 game pace for 10 HR, 28 SB, 62 K's, 36 walks. Fringe CF. 6'0" vs. 5'10". Both RH. The similarities are actually kind of remarkable.

Well, it doesn't really matter. Anybody at AA or above who's worth owning while they are an NA will already be on a minor league roster at this point. So it's essentially a moot point. But if there is some prospect that is unowned and not in the big leagues yet, if they have played at AA and are in Yahoo's system, then you would be within the rules to add them and stash them as an NA or on your bench.

Because Kinsler is the incumbent. And maybe it's a bit easier to teach a young guy new tricks.

Yadier light / Russel Martin are like, 99th percentile projections, fellas. Jimenez is a prospect, but even his slightly above average projections would fall into the backup catcher spectrum. Maximizing him as an asset probably involves giving him a brief showcase and then trading him to the Angels. I wouldn't get too excited. Unless I'm missing something and he has Sal Perez' hit tool, somehow. I guess that might be a remote possibility? I dunno.

That was true of Pillar after signing out of Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2011 but he is doing his best to elevate expectations after reaching Double-A in just his second full season of pro ball. Pillar’s tools aren’t flashy but what he does well – hit, and hit a lot – could carry him to the big leagues. After sitting on him for three games last week, I found Pillar’s ability to get the barrel to the ball to be truly impressive. His quiet load and solid bat speed allow him to make easy contact on a variety of pitches and he uses the whole field very well. He doesn’t have a ton of power but he can drive the ball from gap to gap and pick up some extra-base hits. While I expected Pillar to hit last week, his defense was quite surprising. Tasked with manning center field, he managed quality jumps and consistently took proper routes to the ball. He moved well to both sides and his aptitude for going back on the ball was impressive. Izturis is garbage. The worst position player in baseball this year, save Jeff Keppinger. He's already at -1.3 WAR and ZIPS projects him to provide ZERO wins for the rest of the year.

Maybe you could get like, Burch Smith and Forsythe for Rasmus and a lesser piece. I don't really think Rasmus would have a lot of appeal to them though. They'd likely prefer Gose, even though Maybin is locked into CF for the next 3 years. Big outfield, Gose is cheaper and has more control. Although I don't find it extremely likely that Gose will ever be better than Will Venable. I don't really know, lol.

I'm not sure if there are any "good" 2B out there, but there are definitely names. Logan Forsythe, maybe? Danny Espinosa? Ackley is still kind of a pipe-dream buy low, I suppose. I would be all for getting Brendan Ryan on the cheap and telling Reyes to play 2B. Not happening though, and I wouldn't be interested in playing Ryan at 2B. I'm not exactly worried about Melky, yet. It still looks like he can really, really hit the baseball (for AVG). Hopefully once he gets some power back in his hammies, the pop and the D will tick up.

Rasmus is confounding the issue by playing better than expected (so far). He's reeled in the strikeout rate and he's already at 2 WAR after just 65 games. He could tap the production brakes a bit and still have a 4 win season. Of course, I guess we're all kind of expecting him to slump hard in the 2nd half again. If I was at the helm, I'd have half a mind to go into 2014 with Rasmus the nominal CF and Gose on the bench. Bautista and Melky are both rapidly losing their range and the health of their legs. And on top of that, Rasmus is a flake. Having a guy like Gose right there on the 25 man, ready to step in and chase balls down, would be pretty key. Trading Rasmus or Gose for a 2B is also a viable route though. Then you could just sign a guy like Chris Young, and make him your 4th OF and full time player against LHP (DH or CF platoon)
