Jays:
Drew Hutchison was a treat to watch in Spring Training. 19 strikeouts in 15 innings of work and his velocity made lots of Jays fans optimistic on what this righty can bring to the table. Hoping to tap into the powers of the Dickey effect, the 23 year old righty pitched to a solid 4.60 ERA (4.03 xFIP) in his partial rookie season (58.2 innings in 2012) before needing Tommy John Surgery in a wave of injuries that took out 3 starters within one week (Morrow and Drabek being the other 2). TJ surgery seemed to have done wonders to his velocity as he is throwing around 95 during spring training compared to a 90.1 mph average in 2012. He could have the potential to be one of the few awesome things this season.
The Toronto Blue Jays just can't catch a break. At all. What is it? Are the baseball gods mad at us? Did the Jays f*** up in an alternate world? Or is it just the fact that our management team sucks? Well whatever the reason is, Jose Reyes landed himself on the 15 day DL with a typical (for him at least) left hamstring injury. Great. It was only the 3rd pitch of the ballgame, Jose Reyes hit a blooper to center, only to be robbed by Desmond Jennings. 3 pitches. Now at the time we were all wowing at the fact that Jennings got to that, but what we didn't see is that Reyes sprinted to 1B and felt a hammy issue. Yep. Apparently he wasn't 100% for Montreal either. Whoever cleared him for the game should be fired, along with whoever cleared Janssen to throw with his side being tight. Oh yeah and Drew remains a free agent, Kawazaki remains in AAA but we did however call up Jonathan "John McDonald" Diaz. Whoopty f***ing doo.
The Blue Jays' 19 consecutive non-winning series streak at Tropicana Field is at 19 right now, which is the longest active streak of it's kind since the Rays in Fenway Park from 2000-05 (25 straight series!). Jays are off to a bad start but hope to pick up the final 3/4 games.
Rays:
Like JA Happ and unlike Hutchison's injury, Alex Cobb had a scary accident that led him to miss most of the remainder of the 2013 season. On June 15 Eric Hosmer hit a liner right to Cobb's ear leading to a concussion and didn't return until 2 months later. The kid went on a roll and didn't seem phased, as he struck out 58 in 59.2 innings and a 2.41 ERA in that time period. Oh yeah and he struck out 12 batters in a short spring training outing lol.
The Rays suck at bringing in fans, yesterday's game marked the 67th they play infront of 30,000+ fans at home during regular season play. Their fans need to come more often (well not for Jays games at least lol) as they have a record of 50-17 infront of those nicely sized crowds.
Wil Myers 3 hit performance was pretty impressive last night. It tied his career high in hits in a game and it was the first time a Rays player got 3 hits on opening day since both Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena did it in 2012 against the Yankees.
