    Pillar will be out of MLB within a few years, might hang around in the minors as depth for a few years after that. No reason for a rebuilding team to play him over younger options. I guess the only reason to start him is hope he has a hot start and can return something interesting

    Bolded part is incorrect. He was just above average last year and based on his trend he will likely be average defensively this year. He's been at 2.0 WAR exactly for the past two years, trending down. A team in contention with injury issues will pursue many other available options before enquiring on Pillar. I expect Pillar to be a non-tender after this season unless the Jays manage to get a bag of balls for him.
