I think it makes sense. The hit tool is absurd and he has a great eye to boot. When he learns to lay off pitches that he can't really do damage on (he still pokes those for duck fart singles), the power will come. First he'll get the power, then he'll get the money, then he'll get the women.

I don't love it - Murray has been bad for a few seasons now. Whether or not that's primarily because of the teams in front of him or not, I don't know. I would trust that Dubas and Co. think he can regain his previous elite form, but I just don't share their optimism. Could he though? For sure. I don't keep as up on hockey as I once did, so maybe there are some promising underlying metrics that suggest he can still be that true #1?

Agreed. That's a great value for a guy that still produces like a borderline-elite player when healthy. Obviously the injury and age risk are factored into the term, but it's not too difficult to see that contract providing ample surplus value. And if Malkin just breaks down completely, the contract isn't a crippler.
