  2. Yeah but those teams aren't going to have 16M watching every night, and 51K on a Wednesday like the Jays will when they are playing meaningful games in September.
  3. I just think in the end...the lack of bats on the farm makes the Shields move an overkill move. Trading assets for a Zobrist type would make so much more sense as far as upgrades go. I highly doubt the Jays FO is as high on Devout Dan as most here...but if a Shields signing means he barely contributes, it might not do that much to improve this team. I still think one utility guy that can start the season at 2B is the ultimate move for the Jays and deal with a short term rotation upgrade during the season when you know where the kids are.
  4. If AA is still there...I'll assume at least one playoff appearance by then. And a nightmare off-season for even the best front offices.
  5. so hard to say what a team is going to look like in future years or whether moves even make sense...but right now their window is this year and next.
  6. Reyes age 34, Martin 34, Bautista 37, EE 35, Shields 36 and Donaldson in his last year of Arbitration making close to 20M if things go as planned.
  7. Nothing ever goes wrong not thinking about the future.
  8. About as much as getting a fast car helps Dominican prospects.
  9. How much has being a groundball pitcher with one of the worst defensive infield's behind him helped over the past 3 years? Nothing about his peripherals indicate that he'll fall off a cliff...right now the biggest warning sign about him is that he's a pitcher. That doesn't mean that you are wrong...but at least point out something in his game that you think will change and why.
  10. Nope...just the the ones that newly became Red Sox.
  11. This kind of reaction is why many teams like to avoid arbitration. I don't believe the players take it personally but media and fans play it up. If Donaldson struggles at all, I bet there will be fans and media blaming the arb case.
  12. MLB considers it a waste of time for these cases to go to hearing, the first arbitrators meeting is usually about trying to get a settlement and then the two sides can save face in the public's eyes and say "came up with a last minute deal". I really think the Jays end up amending their File to trial policy and look for a middle ground...unless they are confident they will win (which I'm not). The Nats, Pirates, Indians and Brewers were hard line file and trial teams, who now consider them selves File and Trial by case. I think the Jays, Rays, Braves and White Sox are the last full file and trial (or file to trial as I prefer) teams. The Jays just haven't been tested on it in so long.
  13. Hosmer got 3.6M as a Super 2 last year (and Ike Davis 3.2M the year before). I think that sets the bar...if the Jays came in that low they'd likely end up with paying out Donaldson's ask. I suspect we'll see a midpoint deal if it goes to arbitration (5M)...which if I'm not mistaken would put him 4th all time for super two's (Howard 10M, Posey 8M and Lincecum who accepted two years 23M)
  14. By my calculations our hitters by options remaining (I have only listed players with less than 5 years major league service as anyone with 5 years cannot be sent down without permission, so they pretty much have no options as almost all of them would declare themselves a FA) Donaldson 0 Saunders 1 Pompey 3 Thole 1 Smoak 0 Tolleson 0 Pillar 2 Jimenez 1 Colabello 1 Goins 1 Hague 0 (roster resource doesn't have this but I'm pretty sure I'm correct) Valencia 1
  15. It's a glorified press conference. Questions are vetted, so that nothing they don't want to answer gets asked. When I got asked to submit my questions in advanced four years ago I just about left. Two years ago I sent a question in ahead of time but I knew the "By my calculation the Marlins trade is a $100M value loss. What is the back up plan if you don't make the playoffs in the next two years?" wouldn't get asked
  16. One thing we know about Smoak is that his baserunning will be a negative. IMO He's got to carry around a 110 wRC over 500 PA's to be a 1.0 fWAR guy. I'm not sure why people are big on his D...he's been -12 DRS over his last 200 games. Yes that's better than EE (and Lind) but this guy isn't going to be mistaken for Adrian Gonzalez out there.
  17. Longo vs. Kluber in round 1...so torn. Luckily I'll forget about this in about 30 seconds
  18. Back to The John
  19. Do you mean Spanky and Long Time Reader? Seriously, all the O's guys that came here to the board so far have been calm and are welcome to continue posting all they want. There is an automatic rivalry when fans of opposing teams post on message boards (although no one gets on me for my Rays love because I'm not taken serious enough) but no need to automatically dismiss anyone.
  20. At least by getting rid of Beest Jays open up overpaying for Boras clients.
  21. The Red Sox asked for Garza, Brett Jackson, Starlin Castro among others for compensation for Theo. They got the other Chris Carpenter. Truth is that they know if it goes to any form of arbitration it's going to be low comp as that precedent has been set (back in 1994 for Andy MacPhail). Angelos can remain stubborn but if there any sort of tail off in Baltimore's success this year he'll have to hear the media and fans say "DD isn't trying to improve this team", or "DD just wants out". Does anyone believe that DD would do that (no it's Baltimore's lack of talent that will hinder their success this year) but the scenario I put forward is reality (we saw it in Toronto with Farrell). The O's are much better off to take some form of an asset and part ways. Of course Angelos is not your typical logical owner.
  22. I think the craziest part of their board is that they won't let you post articles from other sites...out of respect for copyright infringements. I think we should be worried about Baseball America coming after us.
  23. RIP Yeralf. Over $500K signing if I recall correctly. Of course he could have had his life spared if they put a strikezone on other cars as there is no way he'd hit it. Too Soon?
  24. So much for the A's real interest being Yunel.
  25. Astros a lock to break their 2013 Strikeout record. Of the 55 players who had 300 or more PA's and a higher than 24% K rate last season...6 of them are Astros now. Gattis at 24.2 K rate...is only 6th worst.
