On July 31st last year the Jays were on a 6 game winning streak, 10 games over .500 and 1.5 games back. Buzz sells tickets...not winning. It's all about perception.

The Pen is a pretty big reason considering the fWAR for their pen the past three years has averaged just under 5.0, and has been a spot that they have picked up cheap wins. Loney and Elmore have been costly as well. I know they didn't expect Loney to put up positive numbers this year but considering how low the ceiling is for him these days I'm shocked they didn't cut bait earlier. Likely they kept putting him out there hoping that he'd do enough to have some team be willing to take the $8M for next year off their hands. Elmore is one I'd love to ask them about. Nothing about him seems appealing, except for his ability to play multiple positions. Rays will always have their offensive stinkers as they try and get some value out of nothing.

half of what I say on here when it comes to the Rays and Jays is tongue-in-cheek. Do I believe the Jays have one of the best teams in the AL right now. Yep, sure do. Do I hope they fail...Absolutely. Do I post this because I know it annoys a couple people. Yes...and all the f***ing time now that I know it irritates you. As for the Rays chances, I had a chance back in May to sit down with one of their front office members, and it showed me just how stupid I am about this game (or just in general as he's just a brilliant guy). When he said "our bullpen will cost us this year, but it's the pen we have to live with" (admitting his department's oversight), it sounded so funny as this was mid May and I had heard over and over from Jays fans how bad their pen was. Boxberger, Jepsen, Gomes all seemed to be pitching well and McGee was set to return. Since that time the Rays pen (even with McGee putting up 1.1 Wins) has been replacement level. I'm well aware they aren't likely to make a big run (but I'll be happy as s*** if they do), but I still have great confidence in that front office.

Actually my hatred for AA became nothing about being a front office member I disrespect to being a person I disrespect. He pissed on my cornflakes this year...can't say much more than that.

I said at the start of the season that barring the Rays making the playoffs...a successful season would be the Rays costing the Jays the playoffs. I don't like the O's at all still, but I don't have to live in a city with them.

I have to say that Mods should have an un-delete feature as RJF's post was a good one. My guess is that after he wrote it he read the part where I said that the Rays play the Jays 6 of the last 9, and he was a little worried about the karma. The "boring" players like Keirmaier, Longo and Archer look forward to meeting the Jays with the playoffs on the line.

Yankees weekend series is sold out. Proving what I've always said: Winning doesn't sell tickets, buzz does. An extra 250K in tickets won't hurt the bottom line for the team though.

Even if we drop out of the picture this still might end up fun for BTS and I. PS. European Soccer doesn't exist and European Football doesn't have playoffs.

Rays are the only team in the Division that can win on the road. Just have to right themselves at home (and beat the weak AL east road teams). Only 7.5 games back, but need to have a good August run...then use as much of the 40 man as possible to hide the weak pen in September. Beating Sale again today is a key game. Who am I kidding they are all big games right now...we need to keep this thread going until playoffs or elimination. Thanks mods for giving us this.

they will place him on waivers regardless. i don't mind the concept. There is a buzz in Toronto right now that has only been seen once in 25 years (from November 2012 until about mid April 2013), if the Jays make a big playoff run there is no doubt it will carry over through most of the off-season...but a small taste of October excitement (a one game and done or just miss) and there will be expectations that the spending will continue. Only real negative I see from a GM/PR point of view is that Shields might be seen as the reason they don't sign Price. The risk here is still the same though. Do you continue to spend on a smallish chance that you are making a deep run. At this point I say the Jays should go balls out and spare no expenses.
