  1. I hate to break it to you, BUT a generational talent does not result from dominating on the minor leagues. Only after they have done it at the major league level, do they deserve that descriptor. Until then, they are only top prospects who may or may not meet expectations when they get to The Show. Other sports are no different, with plenty of top NFL, NHL, NBA picks crapping the bed. That said, Vlad is only 20 and he could very well become a beast at the plate (it took Devers a while after coming up in a similar way as a 20 yo dominating AAA). The difference with Devers is he could be a little bit out of the limelight that Betts, J.D., et al were occupying. Vlad suffers from being the Jays 'great hope' on a team rebuilding mostly from scratch - too much pressure on a 20 yo 'kid'.
  2. Seems racist to say "People think he has no tools because he's white and has a boring name". Ted Williams is a pretty boring sounding name and so is Mike Trout....
  3. yes and certainly few players are infallible (other than the few like Trout when healthy). Even Kenley Jansen has been not so great the last couple seasons, and Kimbrel has been putrid in limited action this season. There is certainly risk in signing a closer to a big dollar deal (B.J. Ryan !), but nothing ventured nothing gained.
  4. So Peter Alonso just jacked his 50th HR of the season and is sitting on 4.9 fWAR. Mr. Administrator, I guess it is time to make this thing official (a deal is a deal, right?!)
  5. This guy is not just a 'reliever'. He has elite stuff and still only 29 yo. OK fine go out and find a dominant closer to acquire in 2 years when this team will hopefully be contending. Yeah that will be expensive in prospect capital -so pay now or pay later. No free lunch. And I sure as f*** wouldn't trust that ass-hat Atkins to get fair value for Giles in an offseason trade -probably will end up with another of his boy-crushes like Drury or Fisher. Now if the Jays actually had a competent GM, yeah then look to trade. Question is what Giles will sign for. I would offer 3/$30M for 2020-22 (includes his last year of 'team control) with a team option of $12M for a 4th year or a 2 M buyout. Pay to play guys.
  6. I really hope they look seriously into extending Giles. If they are expecting to be contending for the post-season in 2021, why not keep him - the guy is excelling with the Jays , likes being with the team and has been an excellent team leader down in the BP.
  7. yeah would rather avoid the 'dreaded' 100 loss season. They weren't going to have a top 3 pick anyway (still 5th worst overall - Woo HOO)!
  8. I would tend to agree. How about Moustakas at 3rd ?! I would say Donaldson, but don't see it happening. ETA: He (Moose) does have a mutual option with the Brewers for $11 M with a $3 M buyout. So may not even be available.
  9. Yep and Vlad at .785. I hope they both finish up strong. Awesome effort running the bases on that triple. This guy is legit. In other news Smoak with only 21 HR and a paltry .747 OPS. That's not going to cut it on the FA market. Jays could probably bring him back for half his current salary (not that I am advocating for that).
  10. So you're saying he's a younger version of Kendrys Morales ?
  11. What if no legitimate contenders want him ?
  12. So fire Atkins and Shapiro ASAP, then have the new management team woo back JD and or EE?
  13. Absolutely but nice job nonetheless and much helpful to a team with a shambles of a starting rotation.
  14. speaking of, this guy has had some kind of nice run. since Aug 2nd: 11 starts (opening), 20.1 ip, only 5 ER
  15. The 'attempt' to compete in 2018 was pretty much based on 'hoping' (predicting) that the old vets would rebound from a down year in 2017. Consider the 4 'core' players JD, Tulo, Morales, and Martin had a combined fWAR of 15.1 in 2016 but only 6.6 in 2017. Unfortunately, their combined fWAR in 2018 was even worse at only 2.7 !! (of course this includes nil from the glassman - one of the most tragic DL cases in MLB history) Similarly, for the 4 pitchers Estrada, Happ, Sanchez and Stroman, the combined fWAR was 12.3 in 2016 and dropped to 8.9 in 2017. In 2018 their combined fWAR dropped all the way to 5.4! It seems that 2018 was a textbook example of everything going wrong!
  16. Keep in mind that the team entered the past two seasons ('17 and '18) with the intent to compete. So this is actually only the first season they entered with the rebuild actually in full progress. Considering the current state of the pitching, a .500 record next season is likely a stretch goal, but hopefully they make some successful additions in the off-season that will jump start things. But I agree this is getting hard to watch.
  17. BUT no pitching studs have emerged this year.
  18. Thanks for the info I guess the biggest issue right now is to improve the pitching.
  19. FUUUCK! I hate seeing all this losing. I would emphasize the 2 unearned runs given up but since the Jays lost 5-0, well (obviously) what's the f***ing difference! But this team does seem to commit a lot of errors ( I would think they are one of the worst in MLB for unearned runs allowed).
  20. career year or breakout season? - the guy is only 25 years old and in his 5th season in MLB.
  21. Sorry I can't find any info on that right now. I thought I saw about a week ago where they said he (Luciano) was ready to get back into game action, but I can't find anything on him at AAA, AA, A+ or Lansing. Anyone ?
  22. Yeah fair enough I still think the 'thinking fan' should look further, particularly if they are unconvinced on WAR itself. It's like taking a hypothetical replacement level team of 55-60 wins and then adding in the combined WAR of your players. It is not that simple. Intangibles and other factors still come into play.
  23. Another guy (currently on the 60 day DL and thus off the 40 man roster) is Elvis. I think he needs something like 17 more days on the active roster to meet the requirements for keeping him via the rule 5 draft. I think the Jays are dead serious about keeping this guy, so you can add him to the Sept. call-up / roster addition list.
  24. Good point - totally forgot about that ETA but wouldn't it be good to get an early read on these guys with a team that literally has no starting pitching right now (Waguespack is currently our best SP )
