    I was thinking along the lines of what is considered Clutch hitting. Can we chalk it up to just randomness? Is there actually such a thing as a clutch hitter? I know this topic comes up every now and then on this board.

    He's like the proverbial old gunslinger who has buried his six shooter and now life circumstances are making him dig it out and get back into action, however reluctantly.

    This is almost entirely wrong. GM's are on the phone almost all day. They are often working the lines trying to find out who other teams are interested in, no one want to bel left off the bus, whether a seller or a buyer. Also it isn't just the GM's but front office staff are contacting other teams as well. There is also a deadline rush to evaluate their own prospects with emphasis on who will not pan out; that way the trade doesn't come back to bite them in ass down the line. Most deals have their genesis earlier in the season (even spring training) where they test the waters and are consumated at the deadline. In terms of what the max they will give up, they don't have a top offer in mind until they see what's on the table. If the temperature is right and the players available will put them over the top, any gm could and will sell the farm to acquire a piece.

    Once you're done with positional adjustments I wouldn't mind getting more detail on validity (or lack thereof) of randomness. I know you have some strong opinions about that.

    1b has the advantage of playing an easier position which he then has an advantage in Fielding Runs above average. It all evens out in the wash. Otherwise it isn’t fair to compare Bo’s fielding percentage to Vladdy. One has a much harder job. WAR accounts for this with a positional adjustment.

    Connor, the whole point of WAR, the reason it is widely used, is just so you can compare players value of different positions to each other.
