  1. At the time the Marlins deal went down, pretty much every single Jays fan, as well as pretty much every baseball analyst thought that the deal was unbelievable for the Jays. Most who now criticize AA for that deal were most definitely praising him when that deal was announced. The same may not be true of the Dickey deal. No one could have predicted Josh Johnson would have played as s***** as he did and would miss that much time, or that all of those injuries would have struck crippling their season. To look back in hindsight and say it turned out to be not what was expected is one thing, but to criticize pulling the trigger on that trade at the time is craziness.
  2. I guess we just have to hope that Gibbons, AA, and their team of assistants, analytics guys and scouts have weighed the pros and cons of all of the options, and will hopefully do what is best for the team and Sanchez.
  3. I totally agree with you that getting another starter is ideal, and the way to go (if it is someone who would be in the top 3 in the rotation), but if it is another 5th starter type of guy, maybe the kid should get his shot.
  4. Stroman had only 35 innings in AAA I think. He had over a 100 in AA though.
  5. Not saying which is the right avenue for Sanchez's development, but just a question to throw out there.... Would Sanchez be better off in AAA, having a AAA catcher call his game and face AAA hitters? or Would Sanchez be better off getting a shot at starting, and having Russell Martin call his games, while having a guy/guys like Buerhle to learn from in the majors?
  6. I think both Sanchez and Norris will get a shot at starting this year, but perhaps they put Sanchez ahead in the pecking order, because they have seen he has had success getting guys out at the Big League level, as opposed to Norris whom they haven`t really given a shot to yet. Some guys are just big league players and perform better on the big stage than in AAA. Sanchez may be one of those guys. Plus, they seem to like to start them off in the pen, before they let them start (i.e. Stroman and Sanchez).
  7. Sanchez is likely going to get the first crack at getting 5th man starts ahead of Estrada, based on what Gibbons said today. It sounds like they want to give him his shot out of the gates to see what he has got. I agree with him, I think you have to see how he handles the role as a starter, and then react accordingly based on the results. Best case scenario he is gold and stays in the rotation, worst case he is back in the bullpen or in AAA starting. I am more comfortable with that than having Estrada start 17 games and wonder what Sanchez would have done with them had they given him the shot. Things will obviously change if the Jays acquire another SP though. http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/gibbons-happ-deal-means-opportunity-for-sanchez/
  8. Interesting article on recently non-tendered player Everth Cabrera. He was one that I thought based on his stats would be a good pick-up at low cost for the Jays, but after finding out a little more about him in this article, he sounds like he would be a cancer in the clubhouse, have lots of trouble off the field, and doesn't have the sort of work ethic that one hopes for in a professional athlete. The link is below. Classic example of more to signing a guy and the impact he would have on a team than just his stats. http://lasordaslair.com/2014/12/04/everth-cabrera-plague/
  9. Would love to see them sign an ace like Shields or trade for Hamels, but I would be afraid at what Hamels would cost them. Also, Lowrie would be great at second, or maybe take a chance on Everth Cabrera.
  10. Should the Jays spend the majority of their remaining $$$ on: Starting Pitching Relief Pitching Infield Outfield
  11. Shi Davidi tweeted #BlueJays now have $121.7m in 2015 commitments including salary arbitration projections for Donaldson, Cecil, Estrada and Valencia
  12. I don't dislike Happ, I just think that Sanchez is a far better talent than he or Estrada, and that your BEST talent should be on the field as much as possible if you have a win this year mentality, which it seems they do. Stroman seemed to look pretty good plugged into the rotation last year rather than in a reliever role, and I am guessing Sanchez would as well. I think you will see Happ traded before the offseason is done.
  13. Sanchez would be best utilized in the rotation. He proved he can pitch in the Bigs last season, and showed great control for a young pitcher. Forget about AAA, he is not a fragile piece of glass who needs babying and protection. He is a professional athlete. He has the stuff to get hitters out, and would benefit way more from pitching to Martin 5+ innings every five days than a minor league catcher. I would rather have him pitching with a broken arm than Happ or Estrada in the 5th spot. AA will not waste him this year in the minors or in the pen, guaranteed. He said he is stretching him out as a starter, odds are he will start.
  14. Our SP is decent. I think Stroman is going to continue to emerge as a top of the rotation guy, and Sanchez will be in the rotation. I think he is ready. Hutch will get a little better, and we can bank on 200+ each in the bank from Dickey and Buerhle. Depth in Happ, Estrada and Norris. Though Ithink Happ will be dealt. Longshot for a comeback, but just curious if Romero will regain any of his old form since he has finally had that knee surgery. A nagging knee injury is enough to mess with delivery, location and mind. Think about how if everytime you stepped as you are throwing a pitch how that would slightly affect those things, especially in a job where inches is paramount and consistency in the delivery is so important. Unlikely he will be back with the Jays, but he may bounce back better than we think. He has it in him somewhere to be an MLB pitcher.
  15. Good point. You could probably get a decent RP for Navarro.
  16. He also was quoted as saying that he tried to hit too much for power in NY and deviated from what worked. Since he went back to what had worked his numbers are pretty good.
  17. Agreed. Ichiro would be a great LF option as well. Could be a good DH as well. Still hits .280+. We definitely don't have to have one with power considering current lineup.
  18. I agree that resigning Melky is the best choice, signing Markakis is a good option as well, but Aoki would my 2nd as he has a similar OBP to Cabrera, and a decent defender, and is likely cheaper than Markakis. Would be happy with any of the 3 though.
  19. You are telling me that Martin and Donaldson will not put up comparable offensive numbers if not better hitting in the Roger's Centre. I love EE don't get me wrong, but Martin is no slouch either, and EE has had the benefit of hitting in a power hitter friendly ballpark the last few years. A lot of would be deep flyballs in other ballparks (like Oakland) would be HRs in the Rogers Centre. Donaldson figures he had 14 that he thought were homers in another ballpark. I don't think Martin's numbers will decline, and there is a very good chance they could increase or at least be relatively close to last years.
  20. Actually he is a really good hitter, and played decent defence last year. He also has a WAR of over 3, three of the last 4 years, which makes him pretty valuable to the team, not mention he is a switch hitter in a righty heavy batting order. He is worth the $10-15 million he will get. I just hope we are the ones to get him.
  21. More powerful hitter than Martin, not better, there is a difference. If he was a better hitter he would have a higher BA and OBP. Some of EE`s walks were intentional, not due to his tremendous eye at the plate. All of Martin`s walks were earned. Whether it goes Donaldson before Encarnacion or viceversa, I figured to maximize EE's/Donaldson's ability to drive in runs you would want Martin in that 5th spot given his OBP. He has some power as well. In the 5th slot behind Bautista and Donaldson would there be anyone left for EE to drive in. Putting Martin there would increase runners in scoring position in front of him, and not waste Martin's .400+ OBP. Didn't think it was that dumb of a thought...
  22. Now: 1)Reyes 2)Martin 3)Bautista 4)Donaldson 5)Encarnacion If They Sign Cabrera 1)Reyes 2)Cabrera 3)Bautista 4)Donaldson 5)Martin 6)Encarnacion
  23. Great deal for the Jays, but not an entirely horrible deal for the A's either. I liked Lawrie a lot, but too injury prone and Donaldson is fantastic. You had to know in order to get him prospects were going to have to be included and I think the Jays did a great job of their core of young pitching in Sanchez, Stroman and Norris. I thought for sure one of them would have had to of been included for Beane to pull the trigger. Too bad Barreto was a piece in the deal, but to get Donaldson totally worth it. Great move by AA, he definitely won the deal in my eyes, but I can see Beane's angle too and why he did it.
  24. Nice to dream of what they could do..... 1) Next move will be to resign Melky Cabrera, if that fails they will likely go after someone like Nori Aoki. 2) Relief Pitcher: if through FA likely Miller, if through trade possibly Bastardo 3) 2B: if through FA Jed Lowrie, if through trade Chase Utley 4) DH: Maybe won't go after one and use Smoak/Tolleson dependent on righty or lefty on mound 5) If they do go after starting pitching I am guessing Hamels via a blockbuster with Philly that could include also Utley or Bastardo Also guessing Happ/Estrada, Navarro, and possibly either Dickey or Buerhle could be moved if they get a starter that gives them 200+ through FA or Trade
