  1. i don't think there's any evidence whatsoever that the payroll will be capped at 140 million. in fact, even if the payroll was to be 160 million, martin's contract being backloaded would still be necessary if we were going after someone like lester...
  2. you are overstating this completely. this can happen to any team, platoon or not. and you can still have bench players beyond the platoon mates.
  3. how does it kill the bench at all? a platoon does no such thing, as their platoonmate becomes the bench player. why would valencia get non-tendered when he is probably the 5th best hitter on the team against lefties and an above average 1b defender?
  4. i'd normally agree, but the blue jays are not in 'development mode' right now. we are in win-now mode, which means that we should use any and all resources to win. pompey is a better hitter left handed bottom line. was in the minors, and in his short stint in the majors. he will get enough major league ABs in garbage time and short bench situations to work on his right, and when he shows he can hit better than pillar right handed, he will win the job outright. until then, pillar is putting up very respectable numbers on the right side with apparently very respectable defense as well. i think this is AA's plan for CF, and LF and 2B will need to be addressed. as for 1b, i think it will be a valencia/smoak platoon and will remain that way until it becomes a disater or someone gets hurt.
  5. i don't think there is any evidence to suggest that pitching in relief short-term limits a pitcher's ability to become a successful starting pitcher in the majors.
  6. AA specifically said otherwise on Prime Time Sports. This is the lineup that i would use with the players we have today. clearly we need help in the pen, OF and sp.
  7. Smoak and Valencia were both better than EE/Lind at 1b. (Although it was a small sample size for Valencia) Everyone hates the Lind trade now, but really the goal of this club was to get better defensively, and Lind was overpaid for what would essentially amount to a platoon DH. EE has publicly stated his preference to remain the DH. i really dont think this is difficult to figure out at all, further acquisitions aside, Smoak/Valencia will be platooning at 1b.
  8. why does everyone have this idea that we can't put jose or donaldson in the 2 hole? i personally would love to see jose's high OBP there. maybe donaldson against lefties.
  9. incredibly stupid post.
  10. vs. lefties ss- reyes rf- jose 3b- donaldson dh- EE 1b- valencia c- martin cf- pillar lf- mayberry 2b- tolleson vs righties ss-reyes c-martin lf-jose dh-EE 3b-donaldson lf-dirks cf-pompey 1b-smoak 2b-izturis -- biggest hole is in LF imo
  11. navarro makes more money and has value as a catcher but you want to leave him on the team and trade away a cheaper, better more versatile player instead?
  12. jumped to the gun obviously ya valencia at 2b was kind of n00b, but the more the merrier! baseball is always going to be a learning experience.. staying ahead of the curve is tough (not trying to imply i am or anything btw).
  13. he will be platooning at 1b/dh...mark my words i think he should be at 1b where him and smoak are both better defenders than EE there. he completely destroyed lefties 135 wRC+...and is a better hitter than navarro and makes less money... even a crappy smoak platooned with valencia will provide more value than dioner. if martin can catch dickey even up to 75% as effective as thole, we will punt him as well and sign a defensive catcher.
  14. i might be a casual particpant of this board, but i assure you you are overstating the correlation you think you've discovered between post count and being a loyal jays fan.
  15. he'd never goto the mets, he wants to rebuild his offensive value on probably a 1 year deal
  16. well lets put it this way he won't be better than valencia / whoever he platoons with
  17. id rather sign drew and i feel he would get paid less. better defender and higher ceiling on his bat IMO. lowrie also hits lefties better than righties, which would kind of compound the big flaw we have in our lineup
  18. he's just not very good. i dont really understand your blind optimism
  19. i still like EE as our primary DH and allowing valencia and smoak to platoon at 1b. both of them do much better in their natural platoon and are much better at defense. navarro's value has never been higher. also AA has shown a great deal of loyalty to jays when trying to trade them (think halladay trade) and i think he wants navarro to have a full time job to build value in his contract year.
  20. i know this will be a contraversial opinion, but i'd rather see what an izturis/tolleson platoon can do before we give up real assets ($ or prospects) for a 2bman.. the market is so thin this year plus worst case scenario we shift reyes back and stick drew at 2b if we sign him
  21. 1. move EE to full time DH... smoak valencia platoon will provide much better defense while limiting EE's time on the turf to parrot walking 2. move reyes to LF...i feel his ego will be reluctant to allow him to do this, but with hanley making the move i think AA should at least approach him with the possibility... also has the tools (straight speed but no lateral quickness, and a strong arm) 3. sign stephen drew to replace reyes at SS on a 1 year deal. he wants to rebuild his offensive value in a hitter friendly park and at worst will provide elite defense. he's also a LH bat. 4. trade navarro&happ to both free up payroll and acquire cost effective bullpen help after these moves, assess your payroll, and attempt to make a big splash for one of the aces.
  22. josh donaldson was the second or third best player in baseball the past two seasons and is still only 29. lawrie's ceiling isn't even ARGUABLY equivalent to josh donaldson right now. literally does nothing better and probably never will.
  23. this seems like it would be an awful move, seeing as he provides depth for our rotation and has options i think the send down to AAA was the correct one--keep him stretched out until injuries or implosions warrant another few spot starts
  24. hmm interesting! so technically he could stay up the entire season and we option him back at the end of every start for an extra reliever, etc.? why don't more major league clubs do this?
  25. lol as would i, but this post was more for how we can strategically use that off-day
