It depends on the wording of the contract. I assume they'd have a clause in there stating that the player must play until a certain year or that part of each year is deferred but there's no hard and fast rule here. Bonilla's deferred payments were basically in exchange for mutually giving up the last year of his contract, not written in.

Just an alert here that this is completely incorrect for any interested parties. The Bonilla situation is entirely different and had nothing to do with retirement. Bonilla had one year and like 10 mil remaining on his contract and the Mets thought it would be a better idea to convert the last year of his contract into a series of deferred payments at 8% interest rather than one lump sum. Bonilla had to agree and if he had retired, he would have sacrificed his final year's pay and the deferred payments would never have been a thing.
