Rajai Davis ® CF Sonny Gray, RHP Gray is 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 0.72 WHIP over his last five starts, with 27 strikeouts recorded in 33 1/3 innings over that stretch. He held the Rays to two runs in 6 1/3 innings in his most recent start Wednesday. PREVIEW... By Keegan Matheson / MLB.com Sonny Gray is scheduled to take the mound for the A's on Tuesday in Toronto as trade speculation continues to swirl ahead of the non-waiver Trade Deadline. The right-hander is peaking at the right time for Oakland, posting a 1.62 ERA over his past five starts while holding opposing hitters to a .155 batting average. Given Gray's high value, affordable contract and additional years of team control, he would be one of the jewels of the market if Oakland decides to explore a deal. Toronto is in a similar position, as it is sitting near the bottom of a very crowded American League Wild Card race and is being forced to make difficult decisions about its roster in 2018 and beyond. The Blue Jays will counter with Cesar Valdez, who is joining the rotation after Aaron Sanchez returned to the disabled list with blister issues for the fourth time this season. Valdez, now in his second stint with Toronto, started the season with a brief stop in Oakland before he was selected off waivers in early May. The veteran made one start and three relief appearances for the A's. Since coming to Toronto, Valdez has bounced back and forth between the Majors and the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He's been used strictly out of the bullpen with the Blue Jays, but he put together a string of four strong starts in his last stretch at Triple-A. Over those 27 innings, he posted a 2.67 ERA. • Gray holds the upper hand against the two switch-hitting sluggers at the heart of Toronto's order. Justin Smoak is just 1-for-17 in his career against the right-hander with eight strikeouts, while Kendrys Morales is 2-for-15. Jose Bautista is 5-for-12 in his career against Gray with a home run, but no other Blue Jays hitters have more than 10 at-bats against him. • Gray's average spin rate on his four-seam fastball has jumped from 2,421 rpm last year to 2,505 rpm this year, according to Statcast. Among more than 100 starters with at least 300 tracked four-seamers in 2017, only Justin Verlander and Yu Darvish have a higher four-seam spin rate. • Toronto's offensive struggles are multifaceted, but on an individual level, Morales could be due for increased production if his batted ball luck levels out. Entering this week's series, Morales had the eighth-largest gap between his batting average and Statcast-expected batting average. Morales has a .024 point gap between the two, while Miguel Cabrera ranks first with a gap of .046.
