Just wondering in regards to the rule 5 draft, what is stopping a team from picking one of our players (in particular a position player), paying the $50,000 and then trying them out in spring training. If they don't like the player, they may get half of their money back from us or they can send them to the minors and only waste the $50,000. Seems like a cheap gamble for some teams. Am I missing something?

I believe this will free up a 40 man roster spot assuming he doesn't make the team. He doesn't need to be added until next year. Can at least protect 1 person from rule 5 draft for now. -

Berti Building Value For Jays October 29, 2014 by Larry Millson TORONTO—Jon Berti keeps proving his value at each stop he makes in the system. After being named MVP of the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the next stop for Berti is with Mesa of the Arizona Fall League. “Basically, he just has to continue to work on all aspects,” vice president of baseball operations Tony LaCava said. “He’s going to see some better pitching out there. He’s going to continue to gain consistency. There’s no real deficiencies that he has to work on.” The 24-year-old hit .270/.323/.373 with seven homers, 50 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 55 attempts in a league-leading 136 games at New Hampshire. He ranked second in the Eastern League in hits (146), stolen bases (40), and at-bats (541), and was fourth with seven triples and was a league all-star. “He’s a very good baseball player,” LaCava said of Berti, an 18th-round pick in 2011 from Bowling Green State. “He comes to play every day. He gives you a good at-bat. He can run, he’s a good baserunner, he’s a good base stealer and he’s a sound defender. A blue-collar type, a winning-type player. His speed is a plus-tool obviously, the calling card. But besides that he grinds the at-bats.” Although primarily a second baseman, Berti also played outfield, third base and shortstop for New Hampshire in 2014. Versatility could be the key to his chances of reaching the majors. “He has moved around,” LaCava said. “We’ve had him play other positions. He did that in Australia, too. His best spot is second base but he has some versatility. He sure could end up as a guy that can play a number of spots and help a team win.” JAYS CHATTER • Outfielder Anthony Alford has committed to baseball after leaving the Mississippi football team. He was allowed to play college football after being signed as a third-round pick in 2012. He quarterbacked Southern Mississippi in 2012 before moving to Ole Miss, sitting out the 2013 football season. In 25 minor league games over three seasons, he has batted .234/.339/.383 with three homers, eight RBIs and 11 stolen bases. • Lefthander Daniel Norris had arthroscopic left elbow surgery to remove bone spurs and loose bodies on Oct. 7. Recovery time is usually about six weeks and he is expected to be ready for spring training. The 21-year-old was 12-2, 2.53, in 26 games (25 starts) at three minor league levels before ending the season in Toronto.

Rule 5 draft coming up next month. I believe teams have until November 20th to protect players by adding them to the 40 man roster. Toronto doesn't have any open roster spots at the moment to protect anyone. Will they drop anyone? If so, who? Will they add anyone to the 40 man?
